# Members and roles

> The workspace and project roles Orbital uses and what each allows, what an invitation gives you, how to delete a workspace, and how many workspaces you can create.

## Two kinds of role

Each person in a [workspace](https://orbitalaip.com/docs/glossary#workspace) has a workspace role. It decides what they can do with the workspace itself: its plan, connections, keys and settings.

A person can also have a role in a [project](https://orbitalaip.com/docs/glossary#project). It decides what they can do with the work in that project. Two role names, member and viewer, exist at both levels.

Workspace owners and admins need no project role. They can open every project, with a project owner's rights. Members and viewers see only the projects they belong to.

You own every workspace you create, including **Personal**, which sign-up creates for you. You are also the project owner of each one's first project, and of any project you create.

## Workspace roles

| Role | What it allows |
| --- | --- |
| Owner | Everything an admin can do, plus deleting the workspace. Only the owner can hand the workspace to someone else, which Settings cannot do. |
| Admin | Managing the workspace's settings and connections, and using Trade, with full access to every project. |
| Member | Working in the projects they belong to, as their project role there allows. |
| Viewer | Reading the projects they belong to, whatever their project role. A viewer cannot create, change, run or delete strategies, workflows, agents, dashboards or watchlists. |

Only a workspace owner or admin can:

- see **Billing**, **Usage**, **AI Models**, **Plugins** and **Developers** in Settings

- change the **Workspace name**, **Workspace logo** or **Country** under **General**

- install an app for the workspace under **Apps**

- use Trade; anyone else sees "Only a workspace owner or admin can see trading."

- change an agent's [permissions](https://orbitalaip.com/docs/agents/permissions-and-approvals), which say what it may do on its own

- remove an item for good with **Delete permanently** in **Trash**

## Project roles

| Role | What it allows |
| --- | --- |
| Project owner | Everything an editor can do, plus renaming or archiving the project and choosing its members. Settings offers none of these. |
| Editor | Everything a member can do, plus deleting or archiving agents and channels, answering an agent's approval requests, and switching an installed app on or off in the project. |
| Member | Creating and changing dashboards, workflows, watchlists and agents. Running workflows and agents. Deleting any of these except an agent. |
| Viewer | Reading everything in the project, without changing it. |

In Backtesting, only editors and above see **New strategy**, **Run…**, **Forward test…** and **Delete…**. A member can still create strategies and run backtests through a connected Claude.

A connected Claude acts with your project role. With the viewer role it can read strategies and backtests, but cannot create them or run a backtest. See [Connect Claude to Orbital](https://orbitalaip.com/docs/claude-and-chatgpt/connecting).

## Managing members

Settings does not list a page for members or projects. It offers no way to invite people, change a role, remove a member or leave a workspace. Nor does it offer a way to rename or archive a project, or choose its members.

For help with any of these, write to [hello@orbitalaip.com](mailto:hello@orbitalaip.com).

## Joining from an invitation

An invitation arrives by email. It names who invited you, the workspace and your role: admin, member or viewer. It expires after 7 days. [Sign up and sign in](https://orbitalaip.com/docs/getting-started/sign-up) walks through accepting it on the **Workspace Invitation** page.

Accepting adds you to the workspace with that role, but to none of its projects. As an admin you can open every project at once. As a member or viewer you see a project only once someone adds you to it. Settings does not list a page for that.

If accepting fails, the page shows **Something went wrong**, the reason and **Go to Orbital**.

| Reason | Why it appears |
| --- | --- |
| This invitation has expired | More than 7 days have passed since it was sent. |
| This invitation was sent to a different email address. Sign in with the account that received the invitation. | You are signed in with another address. |
| This invitation is no longer valid | The person who sent it can no longer invite people to the workspace. |
| You are already a member of this workspace | Your account already belongs to it. |
| Invalid or expired invitation | The link was already used, or the invitation was withdrawn, has expired or its workspace was deleted. |
| Failed to accept invitation | Orbital could not finish accepting it. Open the link again. |

## Ownership

Each workspace has one owner. Settings has no way to hand a workspace to someone else. **Personal** always stays with the account that created it.

While you own a workspace that has other members, Orbital will not delete your account. See [Profile and sign-in](https://orbitalaip.com/docs/workspace-and-account/profile-and-sign-in).

## Delete a workspace

Only the owner can delete a workspace, from **Danger zone** at the foot of **General**. **Personal** cannot be deleted by itself. It goes only when you delete your account.

Deleting is permanent: every project goes with it, nothing is kept in **Trash**, and any subscription is cancelled. See [Workspace settings](https://orbitalaip.com/docs/workspace-and-account/workspace-settings) for the steps.

## How many workspaces you can create

You can create a workspace only while you own fewer than two without a paid plan. **Personal** counts unless it has one. A workspace with a paid plan does not count, and nor does one you joined from an invitation.

At the limit, **Create workspace** under **Workspaces** in the account menu shows a lock. Clicking it opens **Billing** with the plans, instead of the form. Moving one of those workspaces to a paid plan frees a place.
